Fred Betz, PhD, LEED AP BD+C – Building Performance Consultant, Affiliated Engineers Inc.

Fred Betz, PhD LEED AP BD+C is a mechanical engineer whose work focuses on high performance design of large healthcare facilities.  As a Building Performance Consultant, Mr. Betz’s project role includes goal setting and then advancing the energy, water, occupant experience and resilience elements of designs.  His practice is international in scope.

Betz has served as the chair of ASHRAE standard 191 Standard for the Efficient Use of Water in Building and Mechanical Systems for nearly two years. The standard is focused on creating a baseline performance for buildings following a similar pattern to ASHRAE 90.1.  Betz co-authored “Simulating Water: Supply and Demand in the Built Environment” in 2012, which became the basis for the ASHRAE 191 modeling compliance paths, both of which are referenced in the LEED Pilot ACP: Whole Project Water Use Reduction. Betz has presented at ASHRAE conferences, International Living Future, GreenBuild, CleanMed, IBPSA SimBuild, and guest lectures at Colorado University-Boulder, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Southern California, University of Texas-Austin, and Carnegie Mellon University, his alma mater.

    Presentation Title:
ASHRAE Standard 191 – Efficient Use of Water in Building Mechanical Systems

This presentation will provide an overview of ASHRAE Standard 191, which is currently in public review.  The purpose of this standard is to provide baseline requirements for the design of buildings, site, and mechanical systems that minimize the volume of water required to operate HVAC systems, plumbing systems, and irrigation systems.
